Make Sure Employees Feel They Have a Voice

Employee vs. "Exploitative" Employer
This Newsweek article is an interesting case study on how employers can easily alienate employees AND how employees can burn bridges they may need later. The ONE thing that would have likely changed the conversation and at least allowed me to believe either side was 'in the right' would be the manager taking the time to meet with the employee!
NO MATTER WHAT ELSE YOU DO IN YOUR COMPANY, MAKE SURE EMPLOYEES FEEL THEY HAVE A VOICE!
If they have a concern, allow them to present it without judgment, consider it, and RESPOND to them... Either with "OK", "No for X, Y, & Z reason," or see if there is a middle ground that works better for everyone involved.
Nothing will lose you the respect of your employees quicker than shutting them out.
