While the media will try for as much exposure out of this topic as possible (remember it's their job to make money, not to distribute truth) this DOES NOT mean that President Trump, or any company dropping formal Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs, is against diversity. Take a look at Trump's cabinet nominees and you'll see he's inviting an incredibly diverse crowd to work with him. Instead, the dropping of these programs usually signals lack of support for a system that attempts to boil down diversity to people's sex and/or race, at the expense of qualification and organizational capability.
Diversity of thought and experience in your organization, especially in your management team, IS a very good thing. There are two main challenges:
- Balancing true diversity (thought and experience) against capability and interest in available positions
- Quantifying results for anyone looking in from the outside, who in practice will only look for superficial diversity (sex and race)
DEI, like Affirmative Action before it, had good intentions. But when the dial was cranked to 11 in the corporate world as demanded by the social justice mob, many companies could not possibly maintain viability without falling victim to the very issues they are trying to address.
Like many HR issues, there is no universal answer. Each employer needs to address social and operational challenges like these based on their own consciences and with intentional strategy. If that includes a formal DEI policy, great. If not, continue doing whatever you can to best enhance and protect your Brand using all available resources.
