Advice to Business Owners and Leaders: What you allow one employee to do, you can expect everyone to do.

"I'm only a few minutes late for meetings." Don’t be surprised when more employees start questioning everything you do.

"My techs/installers just don't clock in/out." Don’t be surprised when you get sued for wage theft/OT violations.

"It's too much effort to ensure techs are wearing clean uniforms." Don’t be surprised when customers start thinking your Brand looks cheap and buying less from you.

"It's just shop talk, everyone needs to stop being so sensitive." Don't be surprised when there is conflict between teams, or a lawsuit for a hostile workplace/sexual harassment.

Let's go back to Employee Management 101!

Only leadership can set the expectations to represent the Brand.

  • If you are not willing to fire someone over a violation, do not have the policy.

Only leadership can "sell" the value of those expectations to the team.

  • Employees need to understand WHY the expectation is important or they are more likely to disregard it.

Only leadership can hold individuals accountable for not meeting those expectations.

  • Nothing kills the motivation of a good employee like management tolerating bad ones.

This applies to HR, Safety, and Performance expectations.

Be worthy of the Brand you are building and do not let rot spread. As always, I hope this helps.
